Dog & Cat Desexing

At Smithfield Central Vets, we offer safe, compassionate desexing procedures for dogs and cats of all ages. Whether you're planning early sterilisation for a puppy or kitten, or considering surgery for an adult pet, our experienced team ensures the highest standards of care before, during, and after the procedure.

Desexing helps prevent unwanted litters, reduces the risk of serious health conditions, and can improve behaviour and quality of life. We tailor our approach to suit your pet’s breed, age, and individual needs and always put their comfort and safety as our top priority.

Why desex your pet?

  • Females: Reduces the risk of mammary tumours, pyometra, ovarian cysts, and reproductive cancers. Prevents heat cycles and associated behavioural changes.

  • Males: Lowers the chance of prostate disease, testicular tumours, and perineal hernias. Reduces roaming, urine marking, and aggression.

What’s involved in the procedure?

  • Females: Ovariohysterectomy (removal of ovaries and uterus via a small abdominal incision).

  • Males: Castration (removal of testicles through a small incision near the scrotum).

Safety and comfort measures include:

  • Pre-anaesthetic health exam and blood testing

  • Intravenous fluids throughout surgery

  • Modern anaesthetic monitoring equipment

  • Continuous nurse supervision

  • Dissolvable internal stitches (no removal needed)

  • Post-operative pain relief and discharge consultation

Desexing is a routine procedure, but we treat every patient with individual care and attention. With our advanced surgical protocols and in-house pathology, you can feel confident your pet is in safe hands.
